The criticals was born in high summer in a non-air conditioned shed in rural TN. Friends Parker Forbes and Cole Shugart started writing about youth, lust, and the primal aspects of life in their hometown of Nashville, TN. However, choosing to be off grid with no cellphone service, wofting camel blues, and the sweet smell of wild turkey in a sweaty shed is where The Criticals began to craft their sound, free from the outside word. To write and record songs in this environment allowed them to be free of influence from their constantly shifting urban lives. In this steamy shed, they were able to come in contact with their most primal selves, looking at The Stone Roses and Jane’s Addiction as influences. After many moons in the shed, The Criticals released their debut record, Mimosa Hygiene, a collection of anthems about the tribulations of youth, lust, and heartbreak. While the record generated over 75 pieces of earned press from the likes of EARMILK, Brooklyn Vegan, and Comehereflloyd, among others, it also generated 6 figure streams, and attention from major labels. The shimmery temptress that is the industry of cool seemingly mocked The Criticals, as they decided to stay the course on their grassroots course and create music on their own terms, attempting to carve a unique path for themselves built on primal identity, overwhelming lifestyles, and a search for the new Nashville rock and roll.
