The Criticals debut record, Mimosa Hygiene, is a collection of anthems about the tribulations of youth, lust, and heartbreak. The Criticals (Parker Forbes and Cole Shugart) recorded this collection of songs in high summer in a non-air conditioned shed in rural TN. The studio or shed is off grid, away from their home in Nashville, and exists seemingly out of touch from the outside world. The band was able to move away from their city dwelling to write and record these songs of experience and allowed themselves to be free of influence from their constantly shifting urban lives. In this steamy shed, they were able to come in contact with their most primal selves, looking at The Stone Roses and Jane’s Addiction as influences. Since the rel ease of the leading track of the record, “Homebody,” The Criticals have been able to attract global attention. With articles from Earmilk, Popdust, Brooklyn Vegan, and Come Here Floyd, the band has not only been able to captivate their DIY roots but also music critics alike.

The EP begins with “Good Lookin,” a song written and performed with a dream of a futuristic party in San Francisco in mind and is closed with the 3 stanza tribute to youth, “Got No Love.” There truly is something for everyone in this record. There is undoubtedly something incendiary about The Criticals, as they are reminiscent of the non-pompous, rebellious rock and roll that was murdered by the industry of cool. In this case, The Criticals are carving a unique path for themselves built on primal identity, overwhelming lifestyles, and a search for the new Nashville rock and roll.
